This project involved the replacement of the existing roof at a busy public works facility with a combination of Built-Up Roofing (BUR) and a new metal roof system. The facility serves as a hub for municipal operations and has a variety of departments and heavy machinery in daily use. As part of an ongoing renovation, the facility required a durable, long-lasting roofing solution to withstand the demanding operational environment and provide enhanced energy efficiency. The roofing system was designed to offer a blend of traditional BUR for durability in low-slope areas and modern metal roofing for high-traffic sections and aesthetics.The goal was to complete the replacement while minimizing disruptions to the facility’s operations, ensuring the safety of workers and the general public, and maintaining the functionality of the building.

The public works facility is constantly populated by employees, contractors, and visitors, with many people moving in and out of the premises at all hours. The presence of heavy machinery, vehicles, and active work zones created a high-risk environment for both workers and the public.temporary barricades and fencing were installed to create designated “work zones” where roofing work could take place without interfering with pedestrian or vehicle traffic. The use of highly visible signage was critical to alerting employees and visitors of the ongoing work areas.To maintain safe pathways for personnel and visitors, designated entry and exit points were established around the site. Clear walkways were mapped out, ensuring that people could easily navigate the site without getting too close to the construction areaDaily coordination with facility managers ensured that the roofing team was aware of any events, deliveries, or other activities that might impact the schedule. This allowed for adjustments to be made in real time to avoid disruptions.Due to the size and configuration of the site, space for staging roofing materials and storing equipment was limited. The project team had to find ways to store materials in a manner that wouldn’t obstruct facility operations or create hazards in an already congested environment.To reduce clutter and avoid crowding the active work zones, some materials were staged off-site and transported to the job site in smaller, more manageable deliveries. This allowed for just-in-time delivery of materials like BUR layers and metal roofing panels, preventing excess materials from being stored on-site for extended periods.
POST-COMPLETION
Upon completion, the roof replacement at the Hialeah Police Station Headquarters was met with positive feedback from both the police department and the community. The newly Installed built-up roofing (BUR) system not only enhanced the building’s overall appearance but also significantly improved its durability and weather resistance. Officers noted a marked difference In temperature regulation within the station, contributing to a more comfortable working environment, especially during Miami’s hot summer months.
